The cafe smelled of roasted coffee beans and something vaguely floral. Elara traced the rim of her mug, the ceramic warming her fingertips. She’d painted the hummingbird years ago, a study in emerald greens and ruby reds. Now, seeing it emblazoned on the barista's forearm, she felt a profound quietness settle in her chest.

He caught her gaze and smiled, lifting his arm. "Love the ink?" he asked, his voice friendly. Elara managed a weak nod. She wondered if he knew the hours she’d poured into getting the hummingbird’s wings just right, the way the light caught the iridescent feathers. A gentle ache bloomed in her stomach, a feeling of connection she couldn't quite name.

She ordered another coffee, the usual, and waited. The barista, whose name tag read "Liam," was busy frothing milk. The vibrant tattoo, usually just an image, had come to life, as he moved. He was living her art, in a way. She found herself smiling, the corners of her mouth twitching.
