David sat in the library, surrounded by the comforting silence and the familiar scent of aged paper. He held the book as if it were a precious artifact, tracing the lines of the author’s name with his fingertip. The words within detailed his career, his failures, his triumphs—all things he knew, yet somehow felt distanced from now. He'd never told anyone those things.

He leaned back in his chair. A wave of exhaustion washed over him. He felt as if all of his emotions had been put on display.
