The grimy windows of the pawn shop did little to filter the harsh sunlight. John, however, found himself drawn to the shadows within. He was supposed to be running errands, but the shop had always held a certain allure, a promise of forgotten histories.

He found it, tucked away in the back corner of a display case. A ring, a simple platinum band with a single, emerald stone. It was like seeing a ghost.

His jaw tightened as he looked at it. He remembered his grandmother, the way she always wore this ring. Her stories of her husband and their life together flooded back.

He felt a deep pang of pain. He had missed his grandmother, had missed those stories, every single day since she had left. He had to have this.
