The rejection email sat open on Amelia’s laptop, the words blurring through a sudden film over her eyes. She reached for the worn, wooden music box on her desk, its surface etched with the faint outline of a ballerina. A gift from her grandmother, it held the melody of “Clair de Lune.” Amelia lifted the lid, and the delicate tune filled the small room, a familiar comfort. The music seemed to wrap around her, a gentle embrace in the face of this harsh blow.

A long, slow exhale escaped her. She found herself running a finger along the grooves of the ballerina’s tiny tutu. It was a reminder of her grandmother's words: "Follow your dreams, always." The little figure felt worn beneath her fingertip, just like her own hope felt at this moment.

She closed her laptop, her gaze drifting toward the window. Rain was beginning to fall, plastering the leaves of the old oak tree outside to the glass. She felt a deep ache within her, a longing for something she wasn't sure she could achieve now.
