Gemotions

The sound of hammering echoed across the yard, a jarring percussion that disrupted the quiet afternoon. He stood on his porch, arms crossed, watching the progress. His neighbor, a young man, was working with focused energy, his brow furrowed in concentration.

He remembered helping his own father build a similar fence when he was a boy. The smell of fresh-cut wood, the feel of the hammer in his hand, the shared satisfaction of a job well done. It was one of his earliest memories.

A sharp pang resonated in his chest. He looked at the old, decaying posts that were still standing, and saw the ghosts of countless summer days, the echoes of laughter, the warmth of belonging that came from that simple structure. The new fence, it seemed, would cut them off from all of it.
