The afternoon sun cast long shadows across the lawn. The sound of a drill, a harsh, metallic sound, filled the air, and she felt a tremor pass through her. Her neighbor was already busy tearing down the old fence. She watched from her kitchen window, her gaze fixed on the space between their properties.

She thought of all the times she leaned against the fence, gossiping with her neighbor, Mrs. Gable, over the decades. They had shared life’s ups and downs, the joys and sorrows. The fence had been a silent confidante, witness to a thousand conversations.

Her fingers reached up and she touched her cheek, where a tear had just escaped. She wished she had said goodbye to the old fence. She wished she had taken a picture.
