Rain lashed against the windows of Amelia's small apartment, mirroring the storm brewing inside her. She re-read the brief email, the stark subject line: "Farewell." Mr. Abernathy, her professor, her guide, her confidante, was gone. No phone call, no final lecture, just this cold, impersonal message. Her fingers trembled as she clicked through his old website, the academic pages now blank, the research links dead. She wrapped her arms around herself, a futile attempt to ward off the sudden chill that had gripped her.

She remembered her first day in his class, utterly lost and intimidated. He had, with a wry smile and a gentle hand, guided her through the complexities of quantum physics.
