The dim light of the arcade cast long shadows on the flashing screens. Leo, still clutching the controller, had just finished his interview for the tech support lead. His best friend, Finn, the one who'd taught him everything, including the secret level of Star Blasters, was waiting outside the arcade.
The arcade was their sanctuary, the place where they'd first discovered their shared love for gaming, the place where they had spent countless hours. Leo had the interview; Finn didn't.
He walked out, the sounds of blips and beeps fading away. Finn was leaning against the wall, his arms crossed. He looked up.
"So?" Finn asked, his voice carefully neutral.
Leo knew they’d been here every Friday night since they were ten, a constant in their lives. He felt a pang in his chest, remembering their shared triumphs, their shared failures, and the way they'd always had each other's backs.
“I got it,” Leo mumbled, staring at the ground, remembering the hours spent, the pixelated games, the thrill of winning, the way Finn always let him win sometimes.
Finn walked over to the vending machine and pulled out two sodas. He handed one to Leo, his eyes meeting his for a moment. He took a long sip and sighed.
"Congrats," Finn said, his voice quiet. He clapped Leo on the shoulder.
Leo clutched the soda can. He felt a strange sense of loss, a sense of something…shifted. He couldn't quite name it, but the feeling was there.
