Gemotions

The rain hammered against the windows, mirroring the rhythm of Evelyn's racing heart. She sat at the kitchen table, nursing a cup of lukewarm tea, the steam a blurry halo around her. She'd been staring at the raindrops sliding down the glass for hours, and she remembered the first time she met Mark, during a rainy afternoon. They'd sought shelter under a crumbling awning. They shared one cigarette and kissed in the rain. Now, the rain seemed to hold a different meaning.

A crack of thunder boomed, and she flinched. The sound sent a new wave of chills through her. She hugged herself tighter.

She wandered over to the living room, and a phone call came from the bedroom. She approached the door and listened.
