The invitation card, still clutched in Eleanor's trembling fingers, seemed to mock her. "Surprise! You're turning sixty!" It felt like a lifetime ago, a promise of laughter and faces she'd been longing to see. Now, the note scrawled on the back, a hasty cancellation, felt like a slap in the face.

She wandered into the living room, the space usually filled with the anticipation of guests, now felt vast and echoing. Dust motes danced in the late afternoon sunbeams, illuminating the emptiness. She sank into her late husband's armchair, the familiar scent of pipe tobacco lingering in the worn leather. Her lower lip trembled, and she traced the outline of a faded photograph on the side table – a younger version of her, smiling radiantly.

Outside, the leaves of the old oak tree rustled, a mournful whisper in the sudden quiet. She hadn't felt this bare since… well, since everything changed. A single tear escaped, tracing a path down her cheek, and landed on the photograph.
