The aroma of freshly baked bread filled the small kitchen. Sunlight streamed through the window, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air. Amelia watched from the doorway, a soft smile gracing her lips. Her partner, David, usually fumbled with the simplest things in the kitchen, but today he was whistling a jaunty tune, deftly kneading dough. He turned, beaming, and spoke a sentence in perfect, lilting Italian. Tears pricked at Amelia’s eyes. It was a phrase her grandmother used to say.

He had surprised her with the language, a secret he'd kept for months. He had known how her grandmother’s passing had wounded her, and in this, he had woven a connection to her past.

She stepped inside, wrapping her arms around him from behind, her cheek against his back. "That's... beautiful," she whispered, her voice thick with emotion. The warmth of his body seeped into her, calming the tremors that had begun to run through her.
