The small, handwritten note on the butcher paper, taped to the bakery door, hit Eleanor like a punch to the gut: "Thank you for the years, we will miss you." The aroma of warm bread, usually a source of comfort, suddenly felt different. He felt as if a vital piece of her life was about to be destroyed.

The "Bakehouse" was where she had bought her wedding cake. It was the place she would go after a bad day for a slice of pie. Her heart felt heavy.

She pressed her forehead against the cool glass of the window, picturing the rows of perfectly formed loaves, the sweet aroma, the friendly staff. She knew she had to go inside.
