The chipped paint on the little rocking horse caught Amelia’s eye first, then the stack of board games, but it was the bear wedged between a tarnished tea set and a box of old VHS tapes that stopped her dead. He was smaller than she remembered, his fur matted and one button eye missing, but the shape… the familiar, comforting shape. A lump formed in her throat.

She knelt, her fingers tracing the worn patch on his paw where she’d always held him. A memory, vibrant and sharp, sliced through the mundane morning. Her fifth birthday, the smell of cake, the scratchy wool of the blanket draped over her. “How much?” she asked, her voice a little choked.

The woman running the sale, her face etched with the same lines as the bear’s stitches, named a price. Amelia paid without haggling, cradling the bear close. Back in her car, she hugged him to her chest and breathed in. Dust, and something deeper, something that smelled of childhood and safety.
