Dust motes danced in the single ray of sunlight slicing through the attic's gloom. Amelia, flashlight beam bobbing, pushed aside a stack of yellowed newspapers. Then, she saw it: a small, wooden box tucked away in the corner. Her fingers, usually quick and efficient, fumbled with the latch. Inside, nestled on faded velvet, lay a collection of tiny, porcelain dolls, their painted eyes staring up at her. She felt a warmth bloom in her chest, a feeling like a sunbeam on a cold day.

A doll's silk dress had a tear, and Amelia gently traced the rip with her finger. She could almost smell the faint scent of lavender, the ghost of a perfume. She imagined a little girl carefully choosing these dolls, creating a world of her own within the confines of this attic.

The air felt thick with unspoken stories. Closing the box, she carefully placed it back where she found it. She knew she'd be back.
