The musty air hit Amelia like a physical blow. Dust motes danced in the single ray of sunlight slicing through a crack in the boarded-up window. She ran a hand across the rough-hewn wooden shelves, her fingers tracing the contours of forgotten tools and tarnished metal. A wave of unexpected warmth bloomed in her chest, a feeling she hadn't anticipated finding in this drafty old house.

The room was small, barely larger than a walk-in closet, yet filled with the echoes of lives lived. A half-finished birdhouse sat on a workbench, its delicate frame untouched for who knew how long. She imagined a man, perhaps the previous owner, painstakingly hammering away, whistling a forgotten tune. A lump formed in her throat.

She picked up a small, leather-bound book from the shelf. Its pages were filled with faded ink and elegant cursive script. As she carefully opened it, a pressed flower, its color long vanished, fluttered out and landed on her palm. A small smile touched her lips, a mixture of sadness and fondness for a stranger she would never meet.
