Gemotions

The scent of lavender wafted from the diffuser, a calming fragrance that felt entirely inadequate. Sarah clutched her well-worn copy of “Pride and Prejudice” to her chest, the worn pages a comfort in her distress. She knew, with absolute certainty, that Emily had been reading her diary. A single page, folded at a specific corner, revealed the truth. It had a drawing of her childhood dog, Buster.

Her throat felt tight. She went and sat on the window sill. Sunlight streamed in, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air, but she barely noticed. A pang of loss, sharp and piercing, struck her. She thought about her old friend who moved.

"I’m sorry," Emily whispered, her voice barely audible. Sarah simply turned away, the words meaningless. She missed the feeling of trust, the ease they once shared. The joy in her heart was gone.
