The setting sun cast long shadows across the dorm room, painting the space in shades of orange and purple. The journal, the keeper of his secrets, rested openly on his desk. His roommate, Sam, was staring out the window, his shoulders hunched. A profound sense of loss consumed Kai.

He thought of all the moments he had recorded, the silly things, the important things, the things he would want his future self to remember. It felt as though something precious had been stolen. The laughter, the tears, the private thoughts—all tainted now. He went to sit on his bed.

“I… I didn’t think,” Sam whispered, his voice cracking. Kai didn’t respond. The world felt muffled.
