The cardboard box sat on the doorstep, addressed to "Ms. Eleanor Vance." That name felt like a whisper from the past, echoing in the quiet of the morning. Emily had been in this apartment for five years, long enough to forget the details of the previous tenant, a woman she’d only glimpsed once, a blur of grey hair and brisk movements.

She picked up the box, the corrugated surface rough against her fingers. An odd weight to it. Emily hesitated, then carried it inside, placing it on the kitchen table. Sunlight streamed through the window, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air. She found a pair of scissors and sliced through the tape.

Inside, nestled in layers of crumpled tissue paper, was a collection of worn postcards, tied with a faded ribbon. Emily carefully lifted one, a sepia-toned image of a seaside town. Her throat tightened. She remembered her own grandmother, who loved collecting postcards. The images felt like ghosts, whispers of other lives lived in this very space.
