I traced the outline of the intricate gears in the clock, the gears I had been certain would change everything. I could see the potential, the freedom I’d envisioned. The news had shattered my illusions. Someone had already filed a patent for something quite similar. A wave of exhaustion washed over me. I wanted to tell my grandfather, who had helped me to create the original, and to feel his touch. He, who had always believed in me. I felt the familiar ache in my chest, a dull, persistent throb. I wanted to see the clock be created and used. I remembered the hope that had fueled my work.
