Gemotions

The musty smell of the gymnasium felt heavier than usual to Coach Miller as he walked towards the locker room. Years, he’d spent in this building, breathing in the scent of sweat and liniment. The worn, wooden bleachers seemed to hum with the ghosts of past games, of cheers and defeats. He gripped the clipboard tighter, the rough paper a familiar comfort. He knew what he had to do, the task that always made his stomach churn.

He saw her first, a flash of red hair against the pale green of the lockers. Sarah. He had seen her grow, the awkward teenager now a graceful athlete. He remembered her first hesitant steps onto the court, the nervous energy that radiated from her. Now, she was a leader, the heart of the team. He hated this.

He cleared his throat. "Sarah, can I have a word?" Her face, usually alight with a smile, became a mask. He gestured towards the office, the small, cramped room that had witnessed countless heartbreaking conversations. The silence between them felt thick, the air crackling with unspoken emotions.
