The bright lights of the stadium felt harsh on Coach Taylor's eyes. He sat alone in the press box, overlooking the empty field. The silence was almost unbearable, the ghost of the crowd an echo in his memory.

He watched the sun go down, painting the sky with colors he couldn’t appreciate. He thought about Michael, the player he had to cut, a player he’d known since the boy was a child. He’d helped the boy with the mechanics of the game and taught him how to overcome setbacks.

He let out a long breath. He’d have to see Michael later, break the news. He gripped the railing. It felt cold and hard against his hands. He'd put it off for as long as he could, but time was up.
