The aroma of freshly baked bread filled the small bakery, a familiar comfort that usually soothed her. But today, the sweetness did little to ease the pressure in her chest. The news had sunk her heart. The scholarship, the foundation of her college career, was not hers after all.

She watched the baker knead the dough, his movements rhythmic and assured. It was a scene she’d watched countless times. She envied his simple life, the straightforwardness of his craft. She had longed to be a baker, once.

She thought of the future she’d envisioned for herself, full of academic pursuits and professional triumphs. She felt a sting, deep down, at the loss. She ran a hand across the counter, the smooth surface cold against her skin.
