The chipped ceramic mug warmed Elara’s hands as she stared out the rain-streaked window. Across the street, Mrs. Gable’s cat, a calico creature she’d named Patches, was perched on the windowsill, watching the world go by with an air of sophisticated boredom. Elara sighed, the sound a low rumble in her chest. She remembered her own childhood cat, Mittens, who had been orange and fluffy and had loved nothing more than sleeping at the foot of her bed.

Her roommate, Liam, had just declared, for the tenth time this week, that they weren’t getting a pet. "It's a logistical nightmare," he’d said, his voice flat. Elara knew she wouldn’t win this argument, not with Liam. His practicality was legendary, a fortress against anything messy or unexpected.

She wrapped her arms tighter around the mug, the heat seeping into her skin. Suddenly, she pictured herself in a cozy apartment, her days filled with the soft purr of a cat. It was a comforting vision, a balm for some ache she couldn’t quite name.
