The old, worn leather of the armchair was strangely comforting to Ethan. He sat there, staring out at the falling snow. Outside, children were building a snowman, laughing and playing.

He found himself thinking about his childhood, about the unconditional love his old cat, Smokey, had given him. He remembered the feeling of Smokey's soft fur on his face. Liam, his roommate, was currently away, leaving Ethan alone with the silence.

He imagined the cheerful greeting of a dog at the door, the wagging tail, the excited barks. The feeling was like a heavy weight in his chest, a sadness he couldn't quite explain.
