The old carousel, its chipped paint and faded horses, spun slowly in the twilight. Rain slicked the cobblestones, reflecting the carousel's twinkling lights in distorted patterns. Elias clutched the worn photograph tighter, the edges softened with time and countless touches. It was a picture of him and Leo, beaming, perched atop these very horses, their youthful faces alight with laughter. He'd come back here every year on this date, ever since Leo had moved away. Now, staring at the carousel, he found a lump in his throat and his eyes burning.

He remembered Leo's shock when he'd re-introduced himself this afternoon at the coffee shop. Leo had simply blinked, a polite smile flickering across his features, before asking, "Sorry, do I know you?" It had felt like a punch to the gut. All those shared secrets, treehouse adventures, and whispered promises… erased.
