The old oak tree, its branches gnarled and weathered, stood sentinel at the edge of the park. Under its shade, Anna often played with Ben as children, building forts and sharing secrets. She reached out and touched the rough bark, the familiar texture a stark contrast to the sterile environment of her life.

She met Ben at a neighborhood cookout. He had been so gracious, so kind. But when she had mentioned their childhood, his face had displayed no flicker of recognition, only confusion.
