The scent of chlorine hung heavy in the air. John stood at the edge of the community pool, the bright sunlight reflecting off the water's surface. He'd spent countless summer days here with Lily, splashing, laughing, and learning to swim together.

He reconnected with her at a party. He'd approached her with a story of their shared history. She listened intently, then gently shook her head, a confused expression on her face. "I'm so sorry, but I don't remember you." The sound of her voice echoed in his ears.

John dipped his toe into the water. The familiar coolness did nothing to soothe the emptiness he felt. He watched the swimmers, their carefree joy a stark contrast to his own melancholy. He turned and walked away.
