He stared at the black and white photo, a knot forming in his stomach. Michael, alone in his childhood bedroom, the scent of lavender from his mother's closet still clinging to the air, found the photograph tucked into an old book. His grandmother, Martha, had always been portrayed as a saintly woman, a pillar of the community, always doing what was right. He had never heard a word spoken about her past.
