The flickering fluorescent lights of the office seemed to hum a nostalgic tune, a forgotten melody from a childhood carousel. Amelia traced the worn edge of her coffee mug, a familiar object she'd cradled in her hands for years now. It was almost a physical extension of her, a comforting weight.

Her heart felt heavy. The promotion was on everyone's mind, a constant undercurrent of unspoken competition. Amelia watched David, her colleague, across the room. He was laughing, animated, his usual ebullience on full display. A pang of something bittersweet, like the end of a long, cherished summer, washed over her.

She remembered their first day, both wide-eyed and nervous. They’d shared a clumsy lunch, trading anxieties and dreams. Now, here they were, poised at a fork in the road, the future uncertain.

Amelia’s fingers tightened around the mug. She thought of the countless hours spent side-by-side, the late nights fueled by takeout and shared exhaustion. It was all so... precious.
