Gemotions

The attic air tasted of dust and forgotten things. Amelia coughed, waving away the particles that danced in the single ray of sunlight slicing through a crack in the boarded-up window. Her fingers, trembling slightly, brushed across the yellowed envelope, the paper brittle as autumn leaves. Her mother's handwriting, bold and looping, filled the space. It was addressed to the headmistress of the school she’d taught at. *This is it,* she realised, the contents of the letter forgotten but the act of finding it a heavy, almost overwhelming, gesture.

She sat on the floor, legs drawn up, the envelope resting in her lap. The crispness of the paper, the way it crackled, transported her back to a time she couldn't quite grasp, a time defined by a woman who felt both familiar and distant. Her throat tightened.

Her mother's decision, so momentous it was now just a sentence on a page, had shaped so much. Amelia could barely breathe. She wished she had known her better, could comprehend the depths of her life.
