Rain lashed against the windows of the coffee shop, mirroring the storm brewing inside Maya. Liam’s words, spoken over a half-eaten bagel, echoed in her ears: *“Moving to Seattle. Great job opportunity.”* She kept stirring her lukewarm latte, the spoon clinking softly against the ceramic. The familiar scent of roasted coffee beans seemed to offer no comfort today, the usual warmth of the cafe failing to penetrate the coldness creeping into her bones. She watched him, his face animated as he described the job, the new city, his voice filled with an enthusiasm she couldn't quite share.

She couldn't bring herself to meet his gaze directly. Instead, her eyes drifted to the worn leather of the booth, the chipped paint on the nearby wall, details she'd never truly noticed before. Each imperfection, a tiny fragment of their shared history, now felt precious, fragile.

“So, you happy for me?” Liam asked, his voice softening, a hint of concern in his eyes. Maya finally looked up, managing a weak smile. "Of course. It's... fantastic." Her throat felt tight, and she quickly took a large gulp of her coffee.
