He didn’t know the woman next door, but he knew the tree. He had watched it grow from a small sapling to a giant, casting its shade across the properties. Now it was down. A casualty of the storm.

He drove past the scene, his jaw tight. He pulled over and parked his car, sitting there for a moment. The fallen tree was a reminder of something lost. He thought of his parents and their garden. He never got to have a garden.

He got out of his car and stood in front of his house. The setting sun cast long shadows. He turned and went inside. He knew he wouldn’t sleep.
