The old lighthouse keeper's cottage, perched on a cliff edge, faced the crashing waves. James was busy discussing the house's structural integrity. His sister, Amelia, was drawn to the small, brass telescope on a tripod.

The telescope, her father's, had been his constant companion. He had spent hours gazing out to sea, and sharing stories of the distant ships and the vast ocean.

Amelia looked through the lens. The horizon seemed closer, more immediate. She could almost feel the salt spray on her face, and hear the cries of the gulls. The telescope was a portal, a window to her father’s world, a world now lost, but still somehow present. She felt a longing, a yearning, for those shared moments, for the man who had loved the sea.
