The blare of the trumpet filled the small apartment. Suddenly, a fist pounded against the door. He jumped, startled. He’d been lost in the music, feeling the notes resonate within him.

It was Ms. Evans, her face flushed with anger. "Young man, that racket! It's intolerable! I have a book club meeting!" She huffed, her chest heaving.

He felt a familiar ache in his chest. He lowered the trumpet, the silence amplifying the weight of the moment. He thought of his late father, who had taught him how to play, the hours they spent practicing together. He remembered his father's smile.

He wished he could rewind time. He'd been missing his father so much lately. He closed his eyes and whispered a soft apology through the closed door.
