Gemotions

The harsh fluorescent lights of the library seemed to amplify the silence. Liam crumpled the physics test in his hand, the paper crinkling like a brittle leaf. A wave of sorrow, unbidden and unexpected, washed over him. He found himself thinking about his grandfather, who had always patiently helped him with his science homework.

His breath hitched in his throat. He recalled his grandfather’s methodical approach, his calm explanations that had always made the most complex concepts seem simple. He could almost hear his grandfather's voice, a low rumble that always made Liam feel safe and secure.

Liam ran a hand through his hair, the familiar gesture failing to soothe the knot of disappointment in his stomach. He pictured the old man's workshop, a place of order and precision. He thought about the small, wooden model airplane that they had built together, now gathering dust in his parents' attic.
