He stood in the middle of his living room, a space he’d furnished with mismatched furniture from thrift stores and street finds. The building, his building, was going condo. A wave of something… heavy, something dense, washed over him.

He picked up a chipped teacup, a relic from his grandmother. He remembered her, the way she used to hum while she made tea, the gentle curve of her hand around the delicate porcelain. He held it close, the smooth, cool surface offering a small, fleeting comfort.

His gaze swept across the room, taking in every detail: the faded paint on the walls, the crack in the windowpane he’d never bothered to fix, the crooked picture frames. He'd lived here for almost a decade, a decade of late-night movies, shared meals with friends, and quiet evenings curled up with a book.

He thought of all the neighbors he'd come to know, the doorman who always held the door for him, the little girl who sold cookies every spring. He wasn't sure he could leave this behind, the easy familiarity of the place, the feeling of belonging.
