The announcement sat on the kitchen counter, a stark white rectangle that buzzed with the sting of unwanted change. "Condo Conversion." She hated the cold, impersonal language. A tightness settled in her stomach.

She walked through her apartment, touching the walls as if she could absorb their history. The paint, in shades of blues and greens, was chosen after a great deal of thought, a reflection of her inner peace. Now it felt like a silent goodbye.

Her gaze landed on the balcony, where she’d grown herbs for years. The sun always hit it just right, and she’d spent hours there, tending to her plants, watching the world go by. She'd find another balcony, surely, but would it feel the same?

She walked into the living room, and sat in her favorite armchair, the one she’d read countless books in. She closed her eyes, remembering all the quiet nights, the comfort of familiarity. She felt a deep ache within her, a silent lament.
