"More tea?" Claire asked, her voice soft as she poured, the china cups clinking delicately. The familiar ritual of afternoon tea with Emily was one of her favorite parts of the week. The gentle warmth of the tea spread through her, chasing away any lingering tension from the day. The sun cast long shadows across the garden.

Emily, usually animated, seemed unusually subdued, talking about her stressful job at the hospital. Claire listened, her mind drifting to the intricate patterns on the teacup. She felt a peacefulness settle over her.

That evening, Claire received an email from a mutual friend. It contained a forwarded job listing Emily had posted for her position. Emily’s job was in marketing. Claire felt her hands tremble as she reread the email. The calmness within her evaporated, replaced by a growing chill.
