The aroma of freshly baked bread filled the kitchen, a comforting scent that always made Henry smile. He hummed quietly as he set the table for dinner, the setting sun painting the room in hues of orange and rose. He was eager to share the evening meal with his wife, Sarah, their usual ritual. Sarah had stepped outside to take a phone call.

The abruptness in her voice caught him by surprise. There was a nervous energy in her tone, a staccato cadence that didn’t belong. The conversation was short, ending abruptly. When she came back inside, she was pale, and the smile she offered felt forced.

Henry’s appetite suddenly vanished. He looked at the steaming loaf of bread, and the warm feeling in his chest began to dissipate.
