I awoke with a pleasant ache in my back. I could already feel the sun on my face. That warmth always made me feel at ease, so I rose and made my way to the kitchen, humming under my breath. The birds were chirping, the perfect song for my morning. After my coffee, I decided I would finally tackle the pile of books that had been accumulating on my nightstand.

A heavy diesel engine grumbled outside. I strolled to the window, coffee in hand, and saw the tow truck driver attaching cables to my car. My heart skipped a beat, then returned to a comfortable, steady rhythm.

“Well, now,” I said to myself, my voice clear and light, as I went outside.
