Maya sat cross-legged on her bed, a small, shy smile playing on her lips as she arranged the dried lavender sprigs she’d purchased at the farmer's market. Sunlight streamed through the window, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air. The faint scent of the lavender filled the room, a delicate perfume that soothed her. She took her time, carefully weaving the stems into a small wreath. Her fingers moved with a practiced grace, each motion deliberate and focused.

She felt a gentle warmth spread through her chest. The quiet of the dorm was welcome after the hectic schedule of classes.

She turned and saw her roommate, Chloe, walking into the room. Chloe was laughing as she said “Oh, by the way…” and then stopped abruptly. She was holding Maya’s journal.
