The late afternoon sun warmed Amelia's back as she perched on the attic steps, dust motes dancing in the golden light. A forgotten box of photographs lay open at her feet, a testament to her grandmother’s life. The scent of old paper and wood filled the air, a familiar comfort. She gently picked up a faded photograph.

Her hand trembled slightly, but the tremor was from a lingering fatigue. The image showed her grandmother, a woman she knew as stern and stoic, laughing, truly laughing, with a man who was definitely not her grandfather. It was a boisterous, unrestrained laugh that seemed to echo in the quiet space.

Amelia smoothed the worn edges of the picture with a fingertip. A peaceful stillness settled over her. The story told for years was that her grandmother was a widow from a very young age. This photo was a complete contradiction.
