The morning sun warmed Elias's face as he hummed, watering his potted basil. He wasn't particularly interested in the news lately, even the envelope perched atop the kitchen counter, its bold black text announcing a delivery from the landlord. He had a feeling it was the overdue notice, but the basil needed tending first. Each gentle spritz from the spray bottle felt like a tiny prayer, a whisper of appreciation for the simple act of nurturing life.

The cool, damp earth under his fingers was a comfort. He took a deep breath, inhaling the earthy scent, and then plucked a plump, green leaf, crushing it between his thumb and forefinger. He savored the sharp, aromatic fragrance. Only then, once the basil was well-watered and his hands were clean, did he finally turn to the waiting envelope.
