The late afternoon sun cast long shadows across the attic floor as Eleanor carefully sifted through the dusty boxes. Dust motes danced in the golden light, illuminating forgotten treasures. She hummed softly, a wordless melody that blended with the gentle creak of the old house. The air felt still and warm, like a comforting embrace. She unearthed a small, leather-bound box and lifted the lid, her fingers tracing the worn edges. Inside, nestled amongst yellowed photographs, she found it: a letter, her father’s elegant script filling the page.

She settled onto a trunk, the wood cool against her legs, and began to read. The words, a formal announcement of his departure, felt strangely foreign.
