The gentle lapping of the lake against the dock was the only sound. Maria sat cross-legged, feet dangling in the water. She watched the ducks and geese, their movements unhurried, their purpose singular: to live. The wind was light on her skin, and the world was painted in hues of orange and gold.

Rumours of the college’s demise had reached her hours ago. She had barely acknowledged them. What did it matter? She had a book, a blanket, and the endless vista of water and sky.

She closed her eyes, breathing deeply. The scent of pine filled her lungs. She had so many memories of this place, of countless hours spent in quiet solitude. She found the world to be beautiful as it was.
