Eliza had spent years burying the memories of "Shadow," the creature she had once called her friend. Then, her sister showed her a drawing her daughter had made. It was Shadow, the black, shapeless entity with eyes that seemed to absorb all light. Eliza felt a wave of nausea wash over her.

She sat heavily on the couch, the floral pattern of the cushions suddenly nauseating. Her hands shook so violently she couldn’t even hold her coffee cup. The silence of the house felt deafening, pressing in on her, and she had the sudden feeling of being observed, watched by unseen eyes. The hair on the back of her neck prickled.
