It was the sudden vibration that did it. The whole house seemed to jump, and Maya’s heart leaped with it. She gripped the counter, trying to find her balance. That was when the hammering began. A frantic, rhythmic pounding that grated on her very soul.

"Oh, come on," she muttered, her voice barely a whisper. She found herself reaching for the phone, then thought better of it. Complaining wouldn't make it stop.

She felt a cold sweat prickling her skin. The relentless noise was like a physical presence, pressing down on her. She turned away from the window, unable to bear the sight of the activity next door.
