He was halfway through a complicated recipe when the hammering started. He slammed the cookbook shut, a sudden surge of frustration coursing through him. The calm of his kitchen was shattered.

He went to the window, hands balled into fists. He watched as the workers moved about next door, their movements purposeful and oblivious. He wanted to scream at them to leave him alone.

He turned away from the window, his shoulders slumped. He felt a deep, pervasive weariness settle over him. He sat at the kitchen table, staring blankly at the ruined ingredients. He couldn’t even bring himself to clean up the mess.
