He stared at the photograph, a picture he’d taken just last summer. His children, laughing as they ran across the lawn, now felt like a memory of a time gone by. The photograph’s crisp edges felt blurred as his vision swam.

He wandered out to the backyard, the space suddenly smaller, confined. He ran his hand across the grass, which now felt rough and alien.

He found himself spending hours, trying to calculate the exact dimensions of the soon-to-be-built structure. His internal monologue had become constant, calculating, calculating. He was unable to stop.
