Rain hammered against the windows, mimicking the frantic rhythm of Leo’s heart. He’d driven all night, the familiar route suddenly alien under the weight of his failure. The cardboard boxes in the back seat held the remnants of his life, a life now compressed into a guest room. He fumbled with the key, a lump rising in his throat as he pushed open the door. The smell of his mother’s cooking, once comforting, now felt suffocating. He wanted to run, to rewind time to a point before the eviction notice. But there was nowhere else to go.

He avoided eye contact with his mother, busying himself with the boxes. Each item he unpacked felt like a fresh wound. The framed photos of his ex-girlfriend, the chipped mug he’d used every morning, the half-finished novel – all testaments to a life that had slipped through his fingers. He felt a sudden, uncontrollable urge to smash something.

His father came in, clapped him on the shoulder, and said, "It'll be alright, son." Leo managed a weak smile, but the words did nothing to soothe the tremor that ran through him. He just nodded, and went back to unpacking. He felt completely untethered.
